Prof. S. Selvakumar obtained his B.E. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering with Distinction in 1983 from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai and Postgraduate degree in Computer Science and Engineering in 1987 from Regional Engineering College (REC), Tiruchirappalli. He was awarded Ph.D. degree by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai in 1999. Since 1983, he has been in the teaching profession and served nearly for four decades plus and superannuated on 30, April’26 as the Professor (HAG) in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India.
He has been the Head of CSE Department of NIT, Tiruchirappalli, Dean of IIIT, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India, and the Founder Director of IIIT, Una, Himachal Pradesh, India, an Institute of National Importance (INI). He has 43 years of teaching experience and 33 years of research experience (as on 30, April 2026).
His research interests include group communication in high-speed networks, routing, multimedia communication, scheduling for QoS guarantee, mobile networks, network security, wireless sensor networks, and network computing.
He has been the Convener, Computer Support Group (CSG) of NIT Tiruchirappalli and established 10 Gbps high speed campus network connectivity within the campus.
He has to his credit of publishing 106 research papers including 50 in International and National Journals and 56 in International and National Conferences. Eight Ph.D. degrees and Six M.S. (By Research) degrees have been awarded under his guidance.
He completed three projects worth Rs.227/- Lakhs, including Rs.100/- Lakhs project on Collaborative Directed Basic Research in Smart and Secure Environment (CDBR-SSE) sponsored by National Technical Research Organization (NTRO), New Delhi. His contributions to the CDBR-SSE Project were: Unified Network Threat Management Solutions including RBPBoost – a DDoS attack detection using ensemble of classifiers, DEEPA – a Deep Packet Analysis cum Threshold Based DNS Monitoring Tool, H2M2 – a Hybrid Hidden Markov Model to detect host intrusions, and LISISAP – a link level signature based secure anonymous protocol for prevention of traffic analysis attacks. He has also contributed the technical solutions such as DataCrypt – to secure the data in flash drives and CRAYSE – a Search while Crawl technique.
He has completed another project, in collaboration with Dr. R. Kanchana of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering, Chennai, worth Rs.106/- Lakhs as the investigator, “Nagarik Rog Pratirakshak: Unified Smart Immunization Coverage Monitoring and Analysis (UniSICMA)” sponsored by Grand Challenges India – Immunization Data: Innovating for Action (IDIA), Department of Biotechnology, GoI and the technical know how has been shared to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI. Further he has been awarded a joint Indian Patent, “A System and Method for Unification of Heterogeneous Immunization Systems and Improvement of Data Quality” along with Dr. R. Kanchana, bearing the No. 488322, by GoI.
Being the Founder Director of IIIT Una, he had successfully completed the tenure of Founder Director of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Una, Himachal Pradesh, for a period of five years and six months from 05, July 2018 to 22, Dec. 2023 and handled all the challenges to build the institute from the scratch in a bushy/ jungle land of 56 acres which was dedicated to the Nation by the Honourable Prime Minister of India. Currently, IIIT Una is among the top 3 institutes of IIITs.
He has contributed in terms of establishing the permanent campus for the institute within 3 years and 3 months with one administrative (G+1) block, academic (G+3) block, three hostels (G+3), one Director residence (G+1), and one guest house (G+2) within the allotted grant of Rs.128/- Crore. He has been instrumental for designing the curriculum and syllabus for various B.Tech. programs, viz., Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and M.Tech. in Cyber Security. Further during his tenure, the student strength of the institute tripled and achieved academic and administrative excellence which led to the attainment of Campus Placement with an average package of Rs.15/- LPA, tripling it in just five years along with 100% in-campus placement.
He has been the Chairperson of the Working Group of experts for drafting the guidelines document on ‘Sandbox Testing for Digital Delivery of Citizen Services’, and successfully completed the preparation of the document for publication by the CDAC, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, GoI.
He has visited University of Alcala, Madrid, Spain, Iowa State University, Ames, USA, City University of New York, USA, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, University of Vienna, Austria, Singapore, Canada, Switzerland, China, South Korea, and Dubai for research paper presentations.
